Today, Jisc and BibliU have announced a joint offer to provide UK libraries with a flexible and sustainable e-textbook programme.
The offer addresses concerns about managing library budgets due to the high volume of usage across textbooks, while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of leading publishers in providing high quality course materials.
Through their comprehensive range of purchasing models, BibliU will enable libraries to get the best return on investment from their budgets.
Caren Milloy, director of licensing at Jisc, says:
“UK universities have worked together to coordinate their expenditure on e-textbooks through their university libraries providing critical e-textbook content.
"Bringing together collective spend makes more textbooks available, to more students and opens up opportunities to explore new ways of working with students, universities, publishers and BibliU to define the future provision of course content which will help improve student retention and outcomes."
Dave Sherwood, BibliU’s CEO, comments:
“Working with Jisc on this initiative is incredibly important to us. Over the past year we’ve seen usage quadruple, and nearly 300,000 students provided with access to the platform. This testifies to the real demand there is for electronic resources, and not just in response to COVID-19.
"Education technology has really accelerated in these past months, and we’re really happy to be working with Jisc to help make reliable solutions a reality for institutions.”
The pandemic has required universities to shift to a ‘digital first’ delivery of teaching and learning and, since the lockdown, there has been a 300% increase in the use of e-textbooks, according to BibliU.
