Research England and Jisc launch groundbreaking free benchmarking tool for research

The Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) will allow higher education institutions (HEIs) in England to view indications of institutional performance relative to their peers.

Research England and Jisc have announced the launch of the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) – a series of dashboards codeveloped by Jisc data analytics – to help higher education institutions in England understand how they are performing in relation to knowledge exchange criteria.

These criteria include:

  • Research partnerships
  • Working with business
  • Working with the public and third sectors
  • Local growth and regeneration
  • Skills, enterprise and entrepreneurship
  • Public and community engagement
  • Intellectual property (IP) and commercialisation

The first iteration of KEF includes a dedicated data platform which is open and free to use for all.

The platform provides a user-friendly interface for institutions, businesses and the wider public to access and explore the knowledge exchange strengths of different HEIs.

Kathryn Heywood, head of business intelligence at Jisc, says:

“Comparison is always a challenge when designing sector-wide data dashboards. Both Research England and Jisc fully believe that a major strength of the English higher education sector is its diversity, and as such should not be viewed under one broad lens.

“Instead, the design of KEF takes the diversity of the sector into account, and only looks to compare institutional performance between HEIs that share similar demographics.”

Dr Hamish McAlpine, head of knowledge exchange data and evidence at Research England, says:

“We’ve been delighted to partner with Jisc data analytics on the development of the KEF dashboards. This started with exploring how best to visualise the data via an Analytics Lab exercise, which was a great space to explore and develop our thinking.

“But Jisc has also been very effective at developing the final dashboards and associated content in an agile and responsive way. The team’s deep understanding of the HE sector and HESA data made them a natural partner for this project.”
