Jisc distributes open access articles from global publisher Wiley to UK repositories

UK research output made more visible by Jisc Publications Router.

Jisc, the not for profit technology provider for research and education, today announces that global research and education leader Wiley has become the latest publisher to distribute open access full-text articles to UK institutional repositories via Jisc’s Publications Router

Publications Router is an alerting service that makes institutions’ research outputs more visible by automatically sending open access research articles to institutions' systems such as their repositories or Current Research Information Systems (CRISs).

Wiley, one of the world’s largest publishers of scholarly journals, now actively deposits open access content from both their hybrid and wholly open access titles across a range of disciplines from science and medicine to arts and humanities, law, business, social sciences and many others.

The arrangement with Wiley and Publications Router builds upon the read and publish agreement for UK institutions agreed via Jisc Collections last year, as a result of which most UK-authored articles published with Wiley are made open access.

The feed consists of full-text open access articles accompanied by rich metadata supplied as soon as the article is published. For most journals, this is before publication of the relevant journal issue making the majority of articles available within two months of acceptance. Making research output available within this timeframe enables institutions to be confident that they are complying with the policy on open access and the REF.

The metadata supplied to UK institutions via Publications Router includes a link to the relevant creative commons licence that applies to each individual article. This avoids the need for repository managers to chase this information or enter these details manually as they are already populated at article level.

Steve Byford, product manager – open research services at Jisc, says:

“We are delighted to support UK institutions in making their research more visible whilst minimising the administrative burden. Our Publications Router can analyse the metadata supplied by Wiley and matches the article notifications to participating institutions. Whenever a match is formed, the metadata is changed into a format that the institution’s particular platform can ingest, saving valuable time and money.”

Natasha White, Senior Director, Wiley, commented:

"Wiley is committed to open access publishing and we continue to look for ways to extend the reach, discovery and conversation around journal articles. We’re pleased that all the open access content published under the Jisc-Wiley agreement is now easily vailable to institutions in the UK."

Publications Router can transform metadata for a range of compatible systems, including repositories and research information management systems.
